Which one are you?

  1. Router on stock firmware

    I want to put OpenWrt on my router

    1. Read the label: model and hardware version
    2. Find the exact device in the firmware selector
    3. Follow its install notes (often a factory image)
    4. Check SHA-256, then flash
    Firmware download check
  2. Already on OpenWrt or a fork

    I already run OpenWrt, ImmortalWrt or iStoreOS

    1. Find out which distribution you run
    2. Note target, profile and package manager
    3. Back up, then use the matching sysupgrade image
    Which OpenWrt is this?
  3. x86 mini PC or VM

    I am installing on x86 or Proxmox

    1. Check BIOS or UEFI boot
    2. Pick a combined image (ext4 or squashfs)
    3. Verify, unpack, import or write to disk

02Three checks

Identify, match, verify.

  1. 1

    Identify what you have

    On a device already running OpenWrt, these fields say what to download. Trust them over the “About” page.

    root@OpenWrt:~# ubus call system board
    {
      "model": "<device model>",
      "board_name": "<board id>",
      "release": {
        "distribution": "OpenWrt",
        "version": "25.12.6",
        "target": "x86/64"
      }
    }

  2. 2

    Match the exact hardware

    Same model name does not mean same image. All three examples come from the 25.12.6 build lists:

    • TP-Link Archer C6v2 → ath79/generic · v3 → ramips/mt7621
    • CMCC RAX3000MeMMC and NAND units · DDR3 / DDR4 boot files
    • Xiaomi AX3000Tstock layout · OpenWrt U-Boot layout

  3. 3

    Verify the download

    Compare with the sha256sums file in the same download folder. If it does not match, download again.

    $ sha256sum openwrt-*.img.gz
    $ shasum -a 256 openwrt-*.img.gz
    > certutil -hashfile openwrt-*.img.gz SHA256

Tick all six, then start.

Ready. Keep this page open while you flash.

Not yet: anything unticked is a way to brick the device.
