Wired/wireless AP under an existing router: DHCP off, new LAN IP, LAN port

An AP is not “another router”:

  • connect the LAN port, not WAN;
  • disable DHCP on the AP; the main router keeps leasing;
  • put the AP LAN IP outside the main DHCP pool;
  • do not NAT/double-route unless you intentionally want a second router.

This lab verifies wired AP + upstream DHCP only; Wi-Fi SSID/encryption/roaming has no hardware and is E1.

Main router 192.168.1.1 (DHCP)
│ LAN port
│
OpenWrt AP
LAN br-lan 192.168.1.2/24
DHCP: ignore
│ LAN port
│
Client 192.168.1.136/24
gateway 192.168.1.1
  • The client leases from the main router; gateway is .1, not AP .2;
  • AP .2 is for management only;
  • if the client gateway becomes .2, a second DHCP server or a wrong config exists.
Router shellBack up and confirm WAN is not required
Terminal window
uci show network.lan
uci show dhcp.lan
uci show network.wan 2>/dev/null
cp /etc/config/network /etc/config/network.bak.$(date +%F)
cp /etc/config/dhcp /etc/config/dhcp.bak.$(date +%F)

AP mode usually does not need WAN; if WAN remains, ensure it does not steal the default route or NAT.

ExpectedYou know LAN IP, DHCP state and whether WAN is used.

LuCIChange LAN IP, disable DHCP

Network → Interfaces → LAN → Edit:

  1. IPv4 address: 192.168.1.2/24 (outside the main pool);
  2. DHCP Server → General → Ignore interface;
  3. Save and apply.

CLI:

Terminal window
uci set network.lan.ipaddr='192.168.1.2/24'
uci set dhcp.lan.ignore='1'
uci commit network
uci commit dhcp
/etc/init.d/network reload
/etc/init.d/dnsmasq restart

Then reopen LuCI/SSH at 192.168.1.2.

ExpectedAP is 192.168.1.2/24 and no longer leases addresses.

ComputerConnect to the main router's LAN port

Connect the OpenWrt LAN port to the main router’s LAN port; do not use WAN.

Reconnect/renew on the client:

Terminal window
ip addr show
ip route
cat /etc/resolv.conf
ping 192.168.1.1
ping 192.168.1.2

This lab client got 192.168.1.136/24, gateway 192.168.1.1; AP .2 was reachable.

ExpectedThe client leases from the main router with the main gateway.

ComputerConfirm the AP is not serving DHCP
Terminal window
# Linux example
udhcpc -i eth0 -f -q -n -t 5

Check server 192.168.1.1; if it says 192.168.1.2, AP DHCP is still on.

This AP-only lab had no internet, so ping 1.1.1.1 failing is expected; real internet depends on the main router.

ExpectedThe DHCP server is the main router, not the AP.

No wireless hardware, so not verified:

  • SSID/password/WPA2/WPA3;
  • 2.4/5 GHz channel, width, TX power;
  • roaming/802.11r/weak-signal kick;
  • wireless client isolation;
  • multiple APs with one SSID.

Principles:

  • bridge the wireless interface into br-lan;
  • disable DHCP;
  • use WPA2/WPA3, never open;
  • stagger channels, reuse SSID/password across APs;
  • verify wired first, then add Wi-Fi, so you do not change two layers at once.
  • AP DHCP still on, conflicting with the main router;
  • AP LAN IP conflicts with the main router;
  • AP WAN port was connected to the main LAN;
  • a loop between main router and AP.

Disconnect the AP, restore the main router, then change one item at a time.

  • AP is not connected to the main LAN;
  • AP DHCP is off but the main DHCP is off/full;
  • VLAN/isolated port;
  • wireless interface is not bridged to br-lan.

Clients have an address but the wrong gateway

Section titled “Clients have an address but the wrong gateway”
  • another DHCP server hands out .2;
  • client kept an old lease;
  • AP is still running a DHCP server;
  • check cat /tmp/dhcp.leases (the AP should have no new leases).
  • wireless interface is not in the LAN bridge;
  • firewall separates wireless and LAN zones;
  • upstream main router blocks it;
  • client isolation/guest network.
008 lab: wired AP, DHCP off, client leases from upstreamDownload .cast
Real OpenWrt 25.12.6 VM: AP LAN .2, DHCP disabled; the client leased 192.168.1.136/24 from upstream 192.168.1.1, gateway .1, and could ping AP/upstream. This lab has no internet/Wi-Fi.
  • Environment: OpenWrt 25.12.6 x86 VM 200; AP LAN 192.168.1.2/24; dhcp.lan.ignore=1; upstream netns 192.168.1.1/24 + BusyBox udhcpd; client 192.168.1.136/24.
  • Client DHCP: server 192.168.1.1, lease 864000s; gateway .1.
  • Client pinged AP .2 and upstream .1; this AP-only lab had no public internet, so 1.1.1.1 failed.
  • Not tested: real main-router internet, Wi-Fi/SSID/encryption/roaming, Windows/phone clients, IPv6/RA.
  • Cast: public/casts/008-ap.cast; recipe: tests/recipes/ap-mode-25.12.md.
  • This is E2 partial: wired AP/L2/DHCP were tested; wireless and real upstream internet were not.
  • No independent reviewer; conclusions are limited to this VM/netns environment.
  • AP mode is “LAN-only + DHCP off + LAN IP outside the pool”, not a specific UI.
